You may be interested to know that there is a museum in Roanoke, VA that is honoring ships named ROANOKE. It is located at the Roanoke Historical Society located downtown. They have one room dedicated to AOR-7. The museum is expected to display ROANOKE memorabilia for about 3 years. They have commissioned a model maker to make a model of the ship and expected delivery is Sep 2001.
Here is the latest on the event:
This message comes to you from Christina Koomen Smith,
Outreach Coord. for the History Museum & Historical Society of Western
Virginia in Roanoke. My director, Kent Chrisman, has done some digging
and has come up with some answers to your questions:
- The times for the festivities are 5-7 p.m. 21st of Sept. 2001.
- The nearest airport is Roanoke Regional. Dulles Airport, outside of
Washington, DC, is approximately a 4 hour drive; the Greensboro, NC
airport is approx. 2 hours away. Other options would be Richmond, VA (3
hours) or Charlotte, NC (4 hours).
- Roanoke is located on Interstate 81. Interstate 64 connects with 81 at
Lexington, VA, approx. 1 hour north. I-581 connects 81 with downtown
Roanoke.
- Hotel Roanoke and the Patrick Henry Hotel are the two area hotels that
are actually downtown. For other lodging suggestions, we recommend you
contact the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau at
1-800-635-5535, or check their website at www.visitroanokeva.com
- The ceremony calls for business attire or dress blues.
Hope this helps. Let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
Sincerely,
CKS
